Electric
outboards
If you want to use an electric outboard
engine on your Arran 16 for creeping up on your unsuspecting
quarry then I recommend the higher thrust engines of
36lbs and above. The variable speed models are the best
for getting your trolling speed just right in ever changing
conditions.
My best advice is always to have a second
method of propulsion when using electric engines in
case the battery flattens suddenly. Even a set of oars
is better than swimming and a small outboard of whatever
size beats rowing.
Tiller or console?
Tiller or Remote Steer Electric Start
or Manual
You need to way up the options on a few things before
you commit to either a tiller or remote steer engine
option. If your boat is stored in a secure location
or on the water and your outboard is unlikely to be
stolen then fit a remote steer engine.
If you need to bring your engine home with you for security
then the tiller steer option is more suited to you.
If you have a battery onboard already or you intend
to fit electronics then I recommend getting an electric
start engine. Most tiller steer engines can have a remote
kit fitted and therefore be converted at a later date
but it adds to the expense.
I feel it best to fit the remote steer engine option
from new as the engine will come with the manufacturers
control lever box and electric start wiring. The control
box is reasonably priced if bought with the engine when
compared to it been purchased later.
Forward visibility is better when seated in the middle
of the boat behind a steering console rather than on
the rear seat steering. The weight distribution in the
boat is better if your weight is in the middle.
Diesel Inboard or Petrol
Outboard?
Although originally sold in both diesel inboard and
petrol outboard options, the diesel inboard version
of the Arran is no longer made. The cost of fitting
a diesel inboard compared to an outboard engine is mainly
responsible for this.
You are more than welcome to fit your own diesel inboard
engine if you wish but I do not offer this service at
the present time. If you want advice on this subject
please feel free to contact me.
